Warm stone massage

Originally Published: November 15, 2000

A crockpot is cooking up ingredients for a massage. Therapist Debbie Forbes is preparing a warm-stone massage. First Forbes places the smooth lava stones under the client's back and along his chest.

Then she fits smaller stones between his toes and wraps a sheet around the feet to keep the stones in place. She also uses the larger stones during the massage itself.

Forbes says, "The stones are a little bit smoother than the human hand and the stones allows us to penetrate a little bit deeper than you could with your hand or your fingers." Each stone is shaped differently and can be used in a variety of ways.

This is Ben Stetler's first hot stone massage. He says, "It feels a lot different than a normal deep tissue massage -- just feels like it's hitting different parts of the muscles."

The stones are heated up to 120 degrees. They are warm to the touch, but not hot enough to burn your skin. Debbie says the heat seems to relax her clients more quickly. She recently incorporated the technique at the Island Massage shop on Tierra Verde in Pinellas County.

The stone massage used to be available only in exclusive spas, but the therapy is catching-on here in the bay area, becoming a hot trend in massage.
