Use of Some Hypertension Drugs Questioned

Researchers in Amsterdam at the European Cardiology Society meetings are raising questions about a popular class of drugs used to reduce high blood pressure, suggesting they are not effective in preventing two of its major complications: heart attacks and heart failure.

The New York Times reports a new study shows drugs known as "calcium channel blockers" may contribute to nearly 85,000 heart attacks and heart failures in the world each year.

The researchers base their conclusions on case histories of 27,000 patients being treated for hypertension.

More than 12 million Americans take calcium channel blockers. The researchers stressed patients should NOT stop taking calcium channel blockers without consulting with their doctor.
